New buses are good news but we need new laws to protect school children

Alliance Education Spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has welcomed news that Translink has provided a fleet of new buses with special safety measures to protect school children; however, he stated there is an urgent need for legislation to ensure that all school pupils wear seatbelts on buses.

Mr Lunn, who is Mayor of Lisburn City Council and is an MLA in Lagan Valley stated: “I welcome the introduction of this new fleet of buses; however, legislation must urgently be put in place to make it a legal requirement for all school children to wear seatbelts on buses.

“I am hopeful that these new buses will increase safety for our local children, but we need laws to be implemented in order to enforce the use of seatbelts on these buses.

“We have heard about so many tragedies in recent years across Europe involving school buses, so extra legislation is essential to provide the highest possible safety standards for local children.”
