Neeson hails drop in unemployment but says more private sector jobs needed

Alliance Economy Spokesperson Seán Neeson MLA has welcomed news that the unemployment rate has dropped in Northern Ireland but said that the Executive must focus on moving the local economy away from dependence on public sector jobs. Figures released today show that unemployment has dropped from 4.2% in the previous quarter to 3.7% for the period between April and June 2007.

The East Antrim MLA stated: ” Today’s figures showing a decrease in unemployment are good news, but the Executive must also focus on the need to move the economy away from its dependence on public sector jobs.

“More private sector jobs and entrepreneurship are important as the catalyst for a vibrant economy. Following decades of economic stagnation Northern Ireland simply must build a strong private sector and aim to become a world leader in the finance and innovation sectors.”
