McCarthy says one shared sports stadium is better than three projects

Alliance Culture Arts and Leisure Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has said that a new shared multi-sports stadium would be better that simply renovating three stadium. His comments come after the Stormont Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee today discussed the proposal for the funding for the GAA, rugby and football stadiums.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “Northern Ireland deserves a new shared multi-sports stadium, not simply the renovation of the three existing stadia. Government is planning to put so much into these three stadia that they may as well build an exciting new shared sports stadium capable of holding big musical and sporting events instead.

“Sport is for all and in the new Northern Ireland we should have a shared space for GAA, rugby and football. These proposals are a real case of back to the future because government is planning to spend a massive amount of money to simply maintain these three stadia instead of creating a new shared facility.

“We need to be ambitious for Northern Ireland and ambitious for sport here and I believe that a shared stadium is the best way forward.”
