McCarthy calls for research into minimum price for alcohol

Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has said that the Department for Social Development should conduct research into creating a minimum price for alcohol to see if it would help tackle the problems it can cause our society.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “I would like to see research conducted on introducing a minimum price for alcohol to look into the impacts of such a move. At present, some drinks containing alcohol can be bought extremely cheaply and we need to examine this area very closely.

“The vast majority of people consume alcohol responsibly, but the problems caused to society by those who do not act responsibly must be minimised. Creating a minimum alcohol price could be considered as one of a wider range of measures that might help address this issue.”
