Lyttle outlines Alliance support for religious freedom

Alliance East Belfast, Chris Lyttle MLA, has outlined his support for freedom of religious belief during a debate in the Assembly on the threat of execution to 33 Christians in North Korea.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “Alliance fully supports the international human right of freedom of religious belief for everyone.

“Although the focus of this Assembly debate is on the persecution of Christians, it is important to acknowledge that other groups face religious and other persecution across the world.

“Religious persecution manifests itself in many ways, including murder, torture, exclusion from public life by extremist groups across the world and discrimination in politics, business and the justice system.

“I am particularly concerned by the plight of the 33 Christians in North Korea who face the threat of execution for their beliefs. My colleague Naomi Long MP has raised this issue of Christian persecution with the Foreign Secretary at Westminster and all international pressure must be brought to bear on North Korea to secure their release.”
