Lunn says fare rise sends out wrong message

Alliance Regional Development Spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has said Translink’s planned fare rise sends out the wrong message at a time when we should be increasing sustainability and environmental protection. Translink are planning an increase in cash fares by an average of 2.5% for Metro and Ulsterbus, and 4% for Northern Ireland Railway fares, to be introduced next Monday.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “We need to be encouraging people to leave the car at home and get the bus or train and this fare hike send out the wrong message.

“This increase also comes at a time when many people are facing real financial difficulties so any further pressures no matter how small could make life a bit more difficult.

“We need to be looking to the green economy and to increasing the use of public transport to protect our environment, and this announcement is bad news for the public.”
