Lunn reveals spending on Irish and Ulster Scots translations

Lagan Valley Alliance MLA Trevor Lunn has revealed the amount of money spent by the Department of Education on Irish and Ulster Scots translations. He asked an Assembly question on the issue and between 07/08 and 08/09 the figure spent on Irish translation leapt from £13,274 to £47,062.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “The level of spending on Irish translations increased massively between 07/08 and 08/09.

“The figures for the first four years are fairly consistent, yet they leapt up last year and this poses questions that need answering. Was there such an upsurge in demand for translations that it merited the recruitment of two staff members? You have to wonder how they coped in the past before they recruited these two new members of staff.

“I am in favour of the promotion of the Irish language but I am also in favour of value for money, and that was what this question was about.”
