Long condemns attacks on Polish community

Alliance MP Naomi Long has condemned the most recent attacks on the Polish community in East Belfast. Three attacks on homes in the Sydenham, area have been described by police as similar in nature to four previous attacks.

This brings to seven the total number of attacks on the homes of Polish people in the past ten days and appears to be part of an orchestrated campaign in the Sydenham area.

Mrs Long said: “I am proud that many new arrivals to Belfast choose to make East Belfast their home. They are welcome to this city and their contribution to this area is important. I condemn the cowardly attacks which seek to terrorise these individuals, and I know that the vast majority of people in East Belfast, and in Sydenham, do so as well.

“Such acts of intimidation do not define this part of the city. They are perpetrated by a minority with little or no public support. I believe that our diversity is positive, and that everyone has the right to live peaceably in their own homes.

“I encourage anyone with information on those who carried out these attacks to contact police immediately. CCTV may be able to help police identify offenders and I encourage anyone with information to come forward.”
