Lo to demand that Minister gives briefing to Committee on council reform

Alliance MLA Anna Lo, who is Chair of the Environment Committee, has said it is crucial that the Environment Minister Alex Attwood comes to the Environment Committee to provide a briefing on the implementation of council reforms as part of the Review of Public Administration. At this week’s Committee tomorrow she will be demanding that the Minister comes to the Committee as soon as possible to provide a briefing on the issue.
Anna Lo MLA said: “I am going to demand that the Minister comes to the Environment Committee as soon as possible to provide a briefing in relation to the creation of the 11 council model as part of the Review of Public Administration. There seems to be a lack of clarity at present as to how the change to 11 councils will be implemented.
“The Executive has agreed on having 11 councils. This particular issue is not out for consultation.
“It has been reported that the Minister would rather see 15 councils instead of 11. We need to know is the Minster going to implement the 11 council decision or is he going to let someone else implement it?
“At the Committee tomorrow, I am going to be demanding that the Minister comes to the Committee as soon as possible, ideally before Christmas, to clarify what is happening. We need to know exactly how the move to 11 councils will happen and we need details as to the process for this transformation of our local government system. It is crucial that these reforms are made quickly as this process has taken so long already.”
