Housing association situation needs addressed

Carrickfergus Alliance Councillor Stewart Dickson has said that the housing association system needs to be reviewed to find ways to improve services. His comments come after an Audit Office report said that the performance of 14 of 33 housing associations in Northern Ireland was ‘unacceptable’.

Cllr Stewart Dickson said: “We have so many housing associations and there appear to have been problems with a number of them. We need to ensure that the system is efficient and effective so I believe we need to look to make improvements.

“We need to look at the number of associations we have and evaluate how best to deliver housing.

“People rightly expect value for money in services and I think there are areas that could be examined and reformed.

“In every aspect of services we are constantly trying to increase performance and efficiency, and this is essential particularly given the difficult economic times we find ourselves in at present.”
