Farry introduces Employment Bill

Alliance Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry MLA has introduced a Bill designed to build business confidence while maintaining the rights of employees.

The Employment Bill, which will be considered by the Assembly in the New Year, is a part of a package of measures resulting from the Department of Employment and Learning’s review of employment law.

Key measures include a new early conciliation service; discretion for the Labour Relations Agency to rule on the outcome of a dispute before a formal process and measures to protect whistleblowers.

“Getting the right balance will always be challenging, and requires partnership and flexibility if we are to maintain an employment relations system that enhances competitiveness and also offers employees a positive and supportive working environment.

“This Bill has the objective of strengthening Northern Ireland’s reputation as a good place to work and to do business. I remain committed to developing local solutions, which is why I secured the Executive’s agreement to introduce this Employment Bill.”
