Commitment to Public Transport paying off says Armstrong

Alliance Infrastructure spokesperson, Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong, has congratulated Translink on a successful first year of Glider operations across Belfast.

Kellie Armstrong commented: “Investment in modern vehicles has delivered the intended outcome with more people choosing public transport to move across Belfast. The introduction of Glider a year ago was met with opposition from many who were not convinced the system would be good for the city.

“With 30% increase in passengers over the past year, the system has proven to be extremely popular and what’s more it is improving air quality with 1.67 million fewer car journeys being taken. The hybrid technology moves our public transport network towards a more environmentally friendly option for commuters. With the ban on diesel and petrol cars on the horizon it is vital we develop alternatives to fossil fuelled vehicles for private, commercial and public transport.

“I am looking forward to the next phase, when North Belfast will be connected to South Belfast. With more investment in Park n’ Ride facilities and dedicated bus lanes it means Northern Ireland can become less reliant on cars. I will continue to push for investment to help link rural commuters to the public transport network to allow more people to benefit from cleaner commuting.

“Well done Translink and Department of Infrastructure. This is an effective and efficient use of public money for a successful reduction in congestion and positive environmental outcomes.”
