Bradshaw wants removal of South Belfast paramilitary plaque

Alliance South Belfast Councillor Paula Bradshaw has said that she wants to see the removal a UVF plaque from a memorial in the Village area of South Belfast to those who lost their lives in World War One. The Housing Executive paid for the memorial from their budget and European funds, however a plaque to UVF members who died during the Troubles was placed there without their approval.

Cllr Paula Bradshaw: “It is very disappointing that this paramilitary plaque has been placed in this memorial to those who lost their lives in World War One. It is disrespectful to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War.

“This should have been a shared commemoration to those who lost their lives from all sides, so it is regrettable that this divisive plaque has been placed in this memorial garden.

“We have seen some positive work in the area in recent years. Ten years ago there were 21 paramilitary murals, yet there are only three that are left. There is also a major scheme taking place on the main Donegall Road to see the replacement of blue, red and white coloured kerbstones with new decorative ones. I hope that a positive outcome will be achieved which will see the removal of the plaque.”
