Armitage: Belfast supports Hillsborough families

Alliance Councillor David Armitage has said Belfast City Council should stand with the Hillsborough families, after they finally achieved justice 27 years after their campaign began.

The East Belfast Councillor was speaking at the latest Belfast City Council meeting on Wednesday night, where he secured support from other members in welcoming the findings of the Hillsborough Inquest last month.

Councillor David Armitage said: “I was in Liverpool that weekend and April 15, 1989 will stand out as a day we all remember. Not just in Liverpool, or Sheffield, or the football world – it has entered into the nation’s consciousness.

“Not only were 96 people killed and a further 766 injured, but it took over 25 years for the families to receive the justice of knowing the truth of how their loved ones died.

“The chairperson of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, Margaret Aspinall, has already thanked the people of Belfast for their support to date. It is important we continue this link, showing our support to the families and the footballing world.”
