It is understood the 36-year-old man was shot six times on the outskirts of north Belfast and died at the scene. Police believe at least two men were involved in the attack.
Councillor Billy Webb said: “This is a completely shocking crime and I know I speak for the whole community in condemning it.
“This was a brutal killing in the heart of a community who do not want to return to the past. The people of Longlands have suffered many times over the years with similar incidents in and around the area. They are shocked and saddened once again that there has been a loss of life because of someone else’s actions.
“The attackers deliberately targeted their victim and my thoughts are with his extended family and friends at this time. While there are few details at present, nothing can excuse the taking of life.
“This horrendous crime has left this residential area and those across Newtownabbey in deep shock. I would appeal for anyone with information to contact the police as soon as possible.
“This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated and those behind the attack must be apprehended.”
