Dickson raises concerns over Attorney General taking part in investigation of Marie Stopes

Alliance Justice Committee member Stewart Dickson MLA has raised concerns over the appearance of the Attorney General in any investigation that the Committee carries out into Marie Stopes. He raised these concerns during a private session of the Justice Committee on Thursday.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: “I remain unconvinced that the Attorney General should play any role in a Justice Committee investigation in Marie Stopes. I was the sole MLA who raised serious doubt that he should attend any such investigation.

“Given the content of the letter he wrote to the Committee and the unusual approach that he made, I find it difficult to see what objective role he could bring to any inquiry. While I respect his right to assist a Committee, it should be noted that if we require legal advice, we have a well-qualified Assembly legal office to assist us.

“I continue to believe that there is role for the Health Committee to play in this debate considering the lack of a regulatory framework for Marie Stopes to operate.”
