Ulster Hospital unit opening should be a sign of things to come

Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has welcomed the opening of a new maternity unit at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, saying the Minister must make it a sign of things to come. The two new wards, to be opened today by Health Minister Michael McGimpsey, contain 32 beds and a 16 cot neo-natal section.

The Strangford MLA, who is today attending the opening, said: “The opening of this new maternity unit is great news. This unit will ensure that local people receive world-class care in the best surroundings.

“Today’s opening has to be a sign of things to come, and I call on the Health Minister to ensure that it is. People want to see upgrades in our hospitals around Northern Ireland.

“After all, an OFMDFM report indicated that £1.5 billion is being wasted every year on segregation. The Executive needs to stop this massive waste of money and re-direct some of the cash to improving our hospitals.”
