Time for Secretary of State to end suffering of institutional abuse victims and survivors, says Bradshaw

Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has called on the Secretary of State to take immediate steps to implement the recommendations of the Hart Inquiry into Historical Institutional Abuse after the Executive Office’s extended consultation closed.

The public consultation, which had been extended by a month, ended yesterday. South Belfast MLA Ms Bradshaw said it was now long overdue to implement the recommendations of the Hart Inquiry.

“Victims and survivors are literally running out of time to have their dignity restored and their suffering ended. With the consultation having already been extended without clear explanation, it is time for the Head of the Civil Service to hand the responses to the Secretary of State and for the long overdue process of implementing the recommendations to begin.

“It remains a huge concern the Secretary of State chose to pass a Budget for devolved issues which did not include the implementation of the recommendations. Victims and survivors of Historical Institutional Abuse are being further victimised by political failure in both Belfast and London.

“Stalemate is not an option. The situation has long been unacceptable and it is now clearly time for the Secretary of State to take action, as she promised she would directly to representatives of victims and survivors weeks ago.”
