Sectarian attacks show need for more action on community relations

Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy has said that news that police are treating a number of attacks in the Ballymena area as sectarian underlines why the Stormont Executive must take a more pro-active approach on community relations.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “These attacks are simply despicable and it’s deeply worrying that police are treating them as sectarian. Sectarian incidents heighten tensions and hurt the whole community.

“Just because unionists and nationalists are in government, it does not mean that problems on the ground have simply disappeared.

“There can be no complacency on tackling sectarianism. Alliance has consistently pushed the Stormont Executive to be more pro-active on community relations and we will continue to do so. This news underlines the need for action from government to foster a genuinely shared society.

“Creating united community makes sense not only for social reasons but for financial reasons too. £1 billion is wasted annually on maintaining division here. This cash could be far better spent on bolstering our health system and other important public services.”
