The Alliance Group Leader in Castlereagh – who was involved in the decision making process – said the move proved the local authority was dedicated to providing value for money for local residents.
Councillor Geraldine Rice said: “This is a great result for the people of Castlereagh and comes after a lot of hard work and dedication by those involved.
“I welcome the fact all Councillors could come together to agree this rate – which is a one percent drop in the district rate struck last year. I hope the effects will be felt in all households once the final regional rate is added.
“Given the economic circumstances across Northern Ireland the Castlereagh group was determined to deliver a lower rate and worked hard to achieve this. This is a historic occasion as it the last ever rate that will be struck by the existing Castlereagh Council.”
