Pope expresses sympathy after road death

Alliance Banbridge Councillor Brian Pope has expressed his sympathy after a woman died in a car crash on the A1 between Banbridge and Dromore.

The 75-year-old was driving a red Citroen when the incident happened around 12.45am on Sunday. The A1 southbound remains closed in both directions while police continue their investigations.

“My thoughts are with the loved ones of the victim of this road traffic incident,” said Councillor Pope.

“Unfortunately, it is not the first time road safety measures on the A1 have been the focus of attention. I have met with the Department for Infrastructure to express my serious concerns about the situation. It is extremely disappointing the Department has delayed improvements to this road and now today we have seen another fatality.

“The Department needs to urgently bring forward these improvements or at least install temporary safety measures. Regrettably they will have come too late for this poor woman. I urge anyone with information on this incident or who noticed anything in the area at the time to contact police immediately.”
