Alliance Party Spokesperson on European Affairs, Alderman Sean Neeson, has claimed that the establishment of a Northern Ireland Assembly will give the region a more direct input into European negotiations.
Mr Neeson said:
“The European Union is having a greater impact on our lives on a daily basis and a Northern Ireland Assembly will provide Government Ministers from here who can negotiate directly on our behalf in Brussels. It is a time of change within the European union and beyond, when crucial changes are being negotiated on the common Agriculture Policy and the distribution of structural funds. The fiasco over the handling of the BSE crisis clearly shows the need for direct intervention by people solely representing the interests of Northern Ireland. Such a prospect must be a major incentive for people to vote ‘yes’ in the forthcoming Referendum.”
