Mulvenna urges people to be cautious around gorse fires

Alliance East Antrim candidate Cllr Gerardine Mulvenna has urged the public to be cautious around the gorse fires that are burning in areas such as Cushendun where a rescue operation was launched when a man attempted to tackle the fire, he returned home unhurt.

Gerardine Mulvenna said: “Most of Northern Ireland has been hit by the gorse fires that have been burning for a number of days. But the public should avoid areas where gorse fires are burning as they can quickly spread and cut people off.

“The Fire Service has again demonstrated their expertise and bravery in fighting these fires. I would like to pay tribute to their hard work not just over the past few days but their excellent work throughout the year.

“I am very alarmed that most of these gorse fires appear to have been started intentionally. These people are putting lives at risk.

“If anybody has any information about these gorse fires then they should contact the police.”
