Muir welcomes work to tackle Kinnegar sewage problems

Alliance Councillor Andrew Muir has welcomed the start of work aiming to improve the Kinnegar Sewerage Infrastructure in Holywood.

Councillor Muir is a long-term campaigner to resolve the on-going problem and previously secured over £3 million funding for NI Water to resolve the problem.

Councillor Andrew Muir said: “It is fantastic to see this long-awaited work finally get underway, bringing comfort to the many residents in the vicinity that are constantly plagued by odour problems.

“In recent years NI Water has attempted to alleviate the problem by managing tidal flows, but these short term measures have never proved successful. That is why I have campaigned for this initiative, which will involve a programme of sewer laying, tunnelling work and construction of a new wastewater pumping station.

“I want to thank all the statutory agencies that have worked to secure this scheme – including NI Water, which has identified the three problems areas and refined this scheme of work to directly tackle them.

“This much-needed scheme is long overdue and I am hopeful this long-term solution will provide the much-needed relief the local residents deserve.”
