Muir: Holywood death signals better support needed for the elderly

North Down Alliance Councillor Andrew Muir has expressed his sadness, after the body of a man who was deaf lay undiscovered in his Holywood flat for three weeks.

The Party’s North Down Westminster candidate said the tragic incident supported calls for the need for better support and care for the elderly. He was speaking after 70-year-old Alan Hamilton was found in his home after concerns for his wellbeing lead to contact being made with the police and social services.

Mr Muir said: “This is an extremely sad circumstance and my thoughts are with the friends of Mr Hamilton and all who knew him.

“It is completely unacceptable that a respected member of the community should be left undiscovered after they have sadly passed away. If anything this proves the need for a better support and care system for the elderly.

“We are an aging population and this must be taken into account as resources are distributed going forward. But this is also a situation we can all take a hand in preventing and I would urge anyone with elderly neighbours to take time to check on them regularly, so that together we can prevent something like this happening again.”
