McDonough-Brown says upgraded CCTV could help combat Holyland trouble

Alliance South Belfast Councillor Emmet McDonough-Brown has said an upgrade of CCTV cameras in a student area of the city could help prevent further anti-social behaviour there.

Cllr McDonough-Brown was speaking following trouble in the Holyland area last night (Wednesday) and today.

“I recently sought approval to make a modest investment in a camera system in the Holyland to give reassurance, help detect offences and provide a presence until a more comprehensive resolution could be achieved.

“However, the DUP, UUP and Sinn Fein refused to support the community and it is for them to defend their decision. Although St Patrick’s Day is the focal point of major anti-social behaviour in the Holyland, the reality is for many residents it is a year-long problem

“With the right interventions, we can turn the tide in the Holyland and give residents confidence we are taking their issues seriously. Locals want the area to be restored to a quality residential environment and I ask other parties to join the efforts to make it happen.”
