McCarthy – ‘major incident’ at Royal Victoria Hospital is unacceptable

Alliance Health spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has said that the Health Minister must take action to prevent a repeat of the ‘major incident’ that occurred at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Wednesday night due to a large backlog of patients in the Accident and Emergency Department. At one point, 42 patients were waiting on trolleys.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “It is unacceptable that this ‘major incident’ was allowed to occur at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Following the decision to reduce the opening hours at other hospitals, many people will question whether there is an adequate level of resources at the Royal Victoria Hospital Accident and Emergency Department.

“The Health Minister must take immediate action to prevent a repeat of this incident.

“The health and well-being of patients could have been put at risk if a major trauma incident had occurred at the same time.

“However, I would like to praise the exceptional actions of hospital staff who again showed tremendous dedication and commitment to their patients.”
