McCarthy criticises Executive over lack of flood strategy

Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy MLA has stated that the Executive was again unprepared as floods hit Northern Ireland this weekend. He hoped that the Executive would have learnt their lesson from last year’s floods; obviously this was not the case.

Opposition MLA Kieran McCarthy said: “Given the extent of the flooding last year one would have hoped that the Executive would have formulated a stronger strategy to deal with flooding, alarmingly, it appears that they did not. You only have to look at the carnage on our roads and in people’s homes to see that the Executive are no better prepared than last year.

“Lessons were not learnt and now serious questions must be answered.”

“I would however like to take this opportunity to praise the work of the emergency services and statutory agencies who did their best over the weekend even though the Executive has failed to construct a coherent and effective flood strategy.”
