McCarthy calls on Health Minister to reconsider decision not to fund young carers project

Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has urged the Health Minister to reconsider his decision not to provide funding to the young carers project run by the Crossroads Care organisation. The project helps provide support for young carers and gives them an opportunity to take a break from caring for an ill or disabled relative.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “I was very disappointed by the decision of the Health Department not to fund this young carers project. This project provides an opportunity for young carers to take a break from looking after an ill or disabled relative. They have organised a large number of outings and day trips in each year. Around 350 young carers stand to lose out if the Health Department do not provide this funding.

“I have written to the Health Minister, urging him to reconsider his decision. I hope he will change his mind once he realises the invaluable work that this project does.

“This decision once again demonstrates the fact that the most vulnerable in our society are losing out due to Government cuts.”
