McAllister: Flags at Felden breaches shared space

Alliance Councillor Nuala McAllister has said the erection of Irish flags at North Belfast’s Felden Estate directly contravenes its nature as a shared space.

Speaking after a number of flags appeared at the front of the housing area, the North Belfast Assembly candidate said work was on-going to ensure the area maintained its shared potential.

Councillor Nuala McAllister said: “It is extremely disappointing that these flags have appeared and I would urge whoever is behind the erection of these flags to remove them immediately.

“Felden is a thriving area and while I am aware of on-going issues there has been regular engagement among local representatives and the PSNI to ensure that it fully becomes the opening and welcoming shared space it was designed to be.

“Those behind these flags do not reflect the views of the majority in the community, who recognise shared space must remain open, ensuring all sections of society can have access to it and without denying the ability of others to do likewise.”
