McAllister disappointed by removal of plaque marking home of former Israeli President

Alliance North Belfast Councillor Nuala McAllister has expressed her disappointment that an Ulster History Circle blue plaque marking the home of a former Israeli President, was removed due to a fear it may be damaged by vandals.

Chaim Herzog was born in 1918 in Belfast and lived at the property on Cliftonpark Avenue, however his family later moved to the Middle East. He was President of Israel between 1983 and 1993.

Cllr Nuala McAllister said: “It is disappointing that this plaque has been removed to prevent it being vandalised. There are many strong feelings on both side of the debate about the conflict in the Middle East, but there can be no justification for any form of hatred.

“We should not accept any form of intolerance. We must strive to build a society that respects our diversity and seeks to promote understanding of different groups.”
