Chris Lyttle MLA said: “The Alliance Party is committed to building a shared society for everyone that is based on civil and religious liberty and equality for all.
“This motion is in line with the Alliance Party policy to support the extension of civil marriage to same-sex couples with legislative protection for groups and people of faith to define and observe religious marriage.
“It is, however, clear that respectful engagement and dialogue is needed if we are to address people’s concerns and progress this issue.
“Alliance not only supports equal civil marriage but we have campaigned on a range of LGBT issues such as the lifetime ban on gay men donating blood and homophobic bullying in schools. Alliance Executive Ministers David Ford and Stephen Farry have taken action to prevent homophobic chanting at sports grounds and promote LGB inclusive workplaces, and we will continue to work to achieve a safe and shared society for all.
