Lyttle says there’s still room for improvement in beach standards

Alliance Environment Spokesperson Chris Lyttle MLA has welcomed improvements in beach water standards here following news that 22 out of 24 beaches met the EU Bathing Water Directive but said government needs to ensure all beaches pass this test. He said it’s essential that our beaches are protected to boost tourism and local economies.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “While these results are quite positive there’s most definitely room for improvement.

“Our beaches play an important role in tourism and keeping them to EU standards is vital to help bring in tourists and boost local economies. Our beaches and coastlines are the jewel in the crown of our tourism industry.

“Each of these beaches are also areas that are very valued by the local community in terms of the scenery and leisure elements they provide. It’s is of paramount importance that our beaches are maintained to their highest possible standards by government.”
