Lyttle says Gran Fondo will continue legacy of Giro d’Italia

Alliance Chair of the Assembly Group on Cycling, Chris Lyttle MLA, has welcomed the news that Northern Ireland will host the Gran Fondo for three years, starting in May 2015. The Gran Fondo is a cycling race where amateur cyclists are encouraged to take part. It is believed that two long distances races will start and finish at the Titanic Building.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “This is fantastic news that we will continue our link to the Giro d’Italia with Northern Ireland set to host the Gran Fondo. Earlier this year, I proposed an amendment in an Assembly debate calling on the Executive to work on legacy projects from the Giro and I am pleased that Northern Ireland will continue to benefit from the Giro d’Italia.

“The Giro d’Italia was an amazing success when the opening three stages took place across Northern Ireland in May. Every street along the route seemed to be decorated in pink. Thousands came out to cheer on the riders and there was such a great feeling across the country.

“There was such a great atmosphere at each of the stages, and I hope that the Gran Fondo will continue the interest in the Giro d’Italia and encourage more people to get involved in cycling.”
