Lyttle: Homophobia must be removed from our society

Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle has said more must be done to stamp out homophobia, as he put his support behind International Day Against Homophobia.

The MLA for East Belfast said the Alliance Party recognised the dire effects homophobia has on many in our society, adding that Alliance is working to tackle the issue at all levels within the Party.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “The Alliance Party recognises the importance of this issue. We believe in creating a shared society, where equality for all is never questioned and no-one is targeted due to their sexual orientation.

“This belief is demonstrated at all opportunities by our Ministers, who are both delivering inclusion for lesbian and gay people.

“Just this week Justice Minister David Ford published the Department of Justice’s first Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Awareness Guide for staff, proving his commitment to meeting the needs of a diverse workforce. DEL Minister Stephen Farry has also taken steps to ensure a society open to all, with initiatives to create safe and welcoming workplaces for LGBT employees.

“Homophobia in any shape or form is totally unacceptable and must be eradicated from our society. This is why International Day Against Homophobia is so important, drawing attention to the problem that still exists and challenging people’s perceptions on the issue.”
