Lyttle condemns those responsible for attack on police

East Belfast MLA Chris Lyttle has condemned those responsible for a “disgusting” attack on police in his constituency.

The Alliance MLA was speaking after an object was thrown at a PSNI patrol in Short Strand. The device did not detonate and no damage was caused, however, an area between the Albertbridge Road and Bridge End flyover has been sealed off while ATO attends the scene. Some residents remain evacuated.

“This was a disgusting attack made by people who have nothing to offer the community,” said Mr Lyttle.

“If this was indeed an explosive device, this incident could have seen serious injury or even death for police officers or members of the public. The PSNI is there to protect everyone in the community but those responsible for this attack have attempted to murder officers while in the line of duty.

“Within the space of a day we have seen an attempted bomb attack in North Belfast and now this. Those attempting to destabilise the community will not succeed because the vast majority of people have made the choice to never repeat the violence we have seen again.

“Anyone with information on this disgraceful assault on the rule of law should bring it to the PSNI immediately.”
