Lyttle calls for clarity on Afterschools Programme funding

East Belfast Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle is asking for clarity from the Office of First & deputy First Minister on funding for the Playzone Afterschools Project at the Ballymac Centre in the Lower Newtownards Road area following concerns that the project may be in jeopardy.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “I have written to the Office of First & deputy First Minister to seek clarity on funding for the Ballymac Playzone project. This is a vital childcare facility and community resource. Staff at the centre should be supported in their good work rather than worrying from where their next funding will come. Families have been waiting since May for an update and they deserve better.

“I would appeal to the Executive to commit to the long-term funding of this project because of its importance to people in the area. The service meets the developmental needs of approximately 36 children and allows parents to seek employment opportunities they otherwise would not have.

“We need answers for this project as a matter of urgency and we need delivery from OFMdFM on a long term coordinated approach to funding for this important area of provision.”
