Lyttle attends Stormont student protest against scrapping of fee cap

Alliance Employment and Learning Spokesperson Chris Lyttle MLA attended a student protest against the removal of the fee cap at Stormont today and said that higher education must not become class driven or deter those from low income backgrounds.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “University enrolment must not be based on social class. The fees cap simply must be maintained.

“Removal of the cap could prevent those from low income backgrounds from getting involved in higher education and that would be totally unacceptable.

“Higher education is a key catalyst for growing our economy and we need to ensure that high standards are maintained and facilities are adequately resourced in order to deliver the strongest workforce for employers and potential investors here.

“Northern Ireland has a far stronger case for the continued public funding of higher education than England and Wales because of our specific economic circumstances.”
