Lyttle appalled by those who attacked a Police officer

Alliance East Belfast MLA, Chris Lyttle, has condemned those who took part in anti-social behaviour during which a Police officer was hit in the face with a brick.

The Police were responding to reports of a number of young people throwing stones at each other at 10:30 pm on Saturday night in the Grand Parade area in East Belfast, when a brick was thrown at the officer’s car where it smashed through a window before hitting him. The officer’s injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “This Police officer has had a very lucky escape; his injuries could have been far more serious. I hope he will make a speedy recovery and be able to return to his duties as quickly as possible. My thoughts are with him after this traumatic incident.

“There can never be any justification for attacking the Police. Those involved in this anti-social behaviour acted in a totally reckless manner with a complete disregard for the consequences of their actions.

“This was a very serious incident, which will be very thoroughly investigated by the Police, so I would urge anybody with any information to contact the PSNI.”
