Lunn sick of Executive failures after ESA delay

Alliance Education Spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has expressed annoyance after compromise arrangements were announced to address the Stormont Executive’s total failure on the Education and Skills Authority. Minister Caitríona Ruane is announcing that boards will continue to sit beyond the 1 January deadline but the number of members will be drastically reduced.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “This fudge leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. Our entire education system now resembles a sticky mess.

“Our education boards have continued to deliver in difficult and uncertain circumstances through no fault of their own. The new arrangements may be unavoidable in the interests of continuity of delivery but the situation remains totally unsatisfactory.

“What does all this further confusion say about the Executive’s attitude to the needs of our children?

“The quick implementation of the Education and Skills Authority legislation is essential for the future of our education system. This bill could be passed within the next few weeks if parties would stop playing political power games.

“The people of Northern Ireland cannot stomach any more failures from the Stormont Executive. The Executive has moved from being a sign of peace and hope to being an embarrassment. The DUP and Sinn Fein cannot continue to play games with children’s education and Northern Ireland’s future.”
