The device was thrown at a police patrol in the Lecky Road area of Derry overnight. No-one was injured but people in the nearby Charlotte Street were evacuated as a precaution. It is believed dissident republicans were behind the attack.
“Someone could easily have been injured or even killed thanks to this pipe bomb,” said Mr Lunn.
“There was never any justification for pipe bomb attacks in the past and there is not one now. Those behind them clearly do not care what they might do by throwing such a device in a built-up area.
“The vast majority of people in Northern Ireland are opposed to the actions of those behind these sorts of incidents and I call on them to cease.
“If anyone has any information about this incident, I would ask them to speak to police immediately.”
