Lunn criticises PSNI over IRA poster stance

Alliance Justice spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has criticised the PSNI after it refused to take down a poster urging people to join the IRA.

The poster in the Bogside area of Londonderry carries a picture of a masked man with a rifle. A caption states ‘Unfinished business. Join the IRA’. A PSNI spokesperson has stated no crime has been committed and there are no plans to remove the poster, a view Mr Lunn disagreed with.

“This is an image calling on people to join an illegal paramilitary organisation, therefore it is baffling to suggest no crime has been committed,” said the Lagan Valley MLA.

“It also creates fear and intimidation within the local community, and attempts to demarcate territory. While reimaging projects have been successful in Derry and other areas, it is disappointing some want to take us back to images of the past.

“There are no places for images of masked gunmen in our society – it sends out the wrong message and attempts to glorify organisations which do nothing but destroy people’s lives.”
