Long welcomes commitment from Prime Minister

Naomi Long MP has welcomed a commitment from Prime Minister David Cameron to meet with her and with Justice Minister David Ford MLA over the continuing violence in Northern Ireland that has seen the East Belfast representative issued with a death threat and the attempted murder of a police officer outside her constituency office, among other serious incidents of intimidation.

Alliance MP Mrs Long also greeted the Prime Minister’s condemnation of the on-going trouble and his expression of solidarity during Prime Minister’s Questions in Westminster today (Wednesday).

“After this commitment, I hope to meet the Prime Minister in the near future to explain that this gratuitous violence, orchestrated in part by loyalist paramilitaries, is nothing less than an attack on democracy, requiring a display of strong leadership not only from Northern Ireland politicians but from Government, in order to defend democracy, and to refute any claim that loyalism and this intimidation, harassment and violence are in any way compatible.

“I will also assure him my Alliance colleagues and I will not be intimidated from doing the job we are mandated to do, and that will remain the case.”
