Long slams cowardly robbery of pensioner

East Belfast MP Naomi Long has described an assault and robbery of a 70-year-old man in her constituency as “cowardly”.

Alliance MP Mrs Long was speaking after the elderly man was tied up and assaulted during the incident at his home in Abetta Parade around 10.20am yesterday (Sunday). The burglar ransacked the property before stealing the pensioner’s car.

A 37-year-old man has subsequently been arrested but to date the car remains missing.

Condemning the attack, Mrs Long said: “Attacking an elderly man in his own home in such a brutal manner is a low act, carried out by cowards.

“The vicious manner of this incident shows what little respect the perpetrators have for our community. I hope the victim was not seriously injured and he recovers both mentally and physically.

“I would encourage anyone with information on this incident to contact the police to pass it along.”
