Alliance MP Mrs Long received the assurance from Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg during Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons today (Wednesday) that the Government would support the Enough Food for Everyone IF in the lead-up to the G8 summit, which will take place in Co Fermanagh next month.
The East Belfast MP called on the Deputy Prime Minister to pledge the summit would deliver “real action” on ensuring enough food for everyone.
Naomi Long MP said: “Three of my young constituents – Emma Carson, Emma Magowan and Sophie Ebbinghaus – recently presented me with posters they had made supporting the IF campaign and asked me to raise with the Government their concern for other children throughout the world growing up without enough food to survive.
“I am pleased the Deputy Prime Minister was able to do that and of his mention of working hand-in-hand with the IF campaign to push forward a radical agenda to guarantee both tax fairness and proper transparency in the way trade works for the poorest people around the globe is a welcome move.
“While the world’s spotlight is on Northern Ireland and the UK for the G8, it is an incredible opportunity for us to reflect that light into the dark corners that normally get forgotten about. With the IF campaign, we have a real chance to do something proactive to deliver social and economic justice and help eliminate the scourge of hunger.”
