Long saddened by job losses

Naomi Long has said she is saddened by the closure of the Howden UK factory in East Belfast, a move which will lead to the loss of over 100 jobs.

Mrs Long was speaking after at the company, formerly Sirocco Engineering Works, were told they would be made redundant by the end of 2015 at the latest, with operations moving to the Czech Republic.

“This is concerning news, especially following similar closures in the East Belfast area lately,” she said.

“The most important issue is the future of workers there. I have spoken directly to my colleague, Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry, in relation to the staff, so his Department can offer support where required.

“It is vital we work with the community, workers and organisations to help create the conditions where company closures and job losses on this scale become less common, and other organisations see this area as a place to invest.”
