Long quizzes Paterson on impact on NI of planned air charges

East Belfast Alliance MP Naomi Long has today in Westminster Questions to the Secretary of State, Owen Paterson, asked him how he will address any potential impact on business travel between Heathrow/Gatwick and Northern Ireland caused by air passenger duty and airport-levied passenger landing charges for regional flights.

Naomi Long MP said: “These charges could put a lot of extra cost pressures on passengers at a time when people are already struggling to make ends meet. I am particularly concerned at the impact this will have on business in Northern Ireland. These links are vital for attracting investment and building connections which are key to increasing trade for local businesses.

“I hope that the Secretary of State can see the significance of these routes and reconsider or seriously reform these charges which could seriously impact upon our economy here.

“This is a very challenging time and every possible effort must be made to help us grow our private sector. I fear these air charges which could damage travel links to London will have serious consequences for all of us.”
