Long condemns those behind viable device

East Belfast MP Naomi Long has expressed her disgust after a viable device found in her constituency forced a number of residents to evacuate their properties for a period overnight.

Alliance MP Mrs Long said the device, found in the Pottingers Quay apartment complex in the Short Strand area just before 8pm yesterday (Tuesday), had caused disruption to locals, many of whom were forced to leave their homes until around 1am this morning.

The Albertbridge Road, Ravenhill Road and Woodstock Link were also closed. Army bomb disposal experts declared it a small but viable device.

“This was an alarming incident and those behind it showed nothing but callous disregard for the welfare of people in the area at the time,” said Mrs Long.

“Violence is never the answer and the small amount of individuals responsible must realise that. The local community will have rallied together to support those displaced and I would urge anyone with information about this incident to contact police immediately.”
