Lo: We must act on climate change

Alliance Environment spokesperson, Anna Lo MLA, has said a UN report on the effects of climate change has shown why we must take action. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that the output of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases had increased in recent years. The report says that we must move away from fossil fuels and calls for a massive shift towards renewable energy.

Anna Lo MLA said: “This report has clearly indicated the need to act on climate change. We can no longer sit on our hands and maintain the status quo, we must look to invest in new technologies to tackle climate change.

“While there has previously been some debate about climate change, the findings of this report means there can no longer be any question marks over its effects and the need to take action.

“Northern Ireland has such a great potential for renewable energy production from wind, tidal and solar sources. Other countries such as Germany have been leading the way in terms of investing in renewable energy. It is time that Northern Ireland followed suit.

“Furthermore, Northern Ireland needs to have our own specific Climate Change Act to monitor our work in tackling climate change as well as defining specific roles and responsibilities of different Executive Departments.”
