Lo says few racists must not bring shame on Belfast

South Belfast Alliance MLA Anna Lo has said the actions of a few racists should not be allowed to bring shame on Belfast. She said the positive deeds of local people and organisations in assisting the Romanian families who left their homes paints a truer picture of the city. Anna Lo today met some of the people at the Ozone Complex and attended a multi-agency meeting to address the matter.

Anna Lo MLA said: “The actions of a few racist thugs stand in stark contrast to the great efforts of local people and organisations who have pulled together to help these families. The goodwill shown by the vast majority of people paints a true picture of Belfast.

“The families live here, this is their home and we want to do our best to make them feel welcome. These scenes are nothing short of heartbreaking and we simply must deliver for these families.

“The interagency meeting was extremely positive. The Housing Executive has agreed to give the families temporary accommodation and Belfast City Council is going to co-ordinate a core group comprising the statutory agencies to provide support for the families over the next few days.

“Those behind these sickening attacks need to be taken off our streets as quickly as possible and I would call on anyone who can assist police with their enquiries to do so immediately.”
